Hey guys, it’s Travis at gaspumpheaven.com. We’ve been getting a few phone calls from folks that are struggling to identify a gas pump that they bought online or found out on the farm or dug out of a ditch somewhere. So we decided to put together a few videos to help you identify what kind of pump you have and we’ve categorized them into four groups.
Now the first group is what we call pre-visible. Pre-visibles are the oldest of all gas pumps. So if your pump has no way to tabulate the amount of fuel purchased or the price or has a similar look to what you see here, then click right here and you’ll see our video further identifying pre-visible pumps.
Now the second category we’re going to cover are visible gas pumps. Now if your pump has a large glass cylinder on top of it or at least a place that one should go, this area may also have a metal or a mesh cage around it. If you have any of these, then you probably have a visible pump. Now remember, for it to be a true visible pump, you have to see the gas in a large container at the very top of the pump. Not the little sight glass on the front. We’ll get into those in just a minute. So if your pump looks like what I just described, then go ahead and click right here to see our video on visible pumps.
The third type of pump we’re going to cover here is a clock face pump. Now clock face pumps have a face that looks similar to a clock and the dial usually starts at zero and goes to 19. There are two hands on it, one large and one small, just like a clock face itself. They can even be round, square or rectangular. Now if the face itself is missing and you see the inner workings, look and see if there’s a little post that would spin those clock dials, then you most likely have a clock face pump. And to learn more about clock face pump and to see our in-depth video, go ahead and click right here.
Now the fourth type of pump is a computer or a meter pump. Now these meter pumps in a lot of cases are the same as their clock face counterparts. For example, we’ve been doing videos on restoring a Wayne 60, which is a metered version, but I turned it into a clock face version with our simple clock face conversion kit. Now meter pumps have the dials inside that take the price of the gas, which is set on the dials at the very bottom. Plus there’s another set of dials which will tabulate the amount of gallon sold and then it automatically calculates it into a third set of dials giving you the total sale. So if your pump matches this description or looks like any of these, go ahead and click right here and you’ll see our video on meter pumps.
